about

Ben says:

This song was put together in New Haven, CT in the fall of 1971. It’s working title was “For Pete” (Pete being my younger brother). It describes a place in Michigan north of Saginaw where Pete and I and some of our friends would camp when we were young. It is a part of the Huron National Forest along the Au Sable River, about 15 miles
upstream of the mouth of the river on Lake Huron. The original words “High Banks” (the name given to the banks of the river where we sometimes stayed that are maybe 50-100 feet above the river) were
changed for this version to “highway”, which I actually prefer. This song was originally recorded in 1975 by Pete and me (and Willard Spencer, the
long time banjo player for Ann Arbor’s RFD boys) at Willard’s basement recording studio for Pete’s album “Mushroom Country”.

lyrics

AU SABLE COUNTRY
(B. Stark)

CHORUS:
Au Sable country seems to call me back home
and the moonlight on the highway won’t leave me alone
As she rolls through the evening to that Lake Huron shore
She calls me back beside her just like it was before

Well, I’ve been wandering ‘round this country for too long a time
and I’ve begged and I’ve pleaded just to raise me a dime
so that I could hop a Greyhound back to where the pines grow free
and a smile is in the sunshine and a song’s in every tree

CHORUS

Well a man just can’t be happy if he don’t know his own mind
But the answers to some questions there are mighty hard to find
Still I’m gonna think it over ‘cause I gotta know for sure
I got a feeling I won’t be leaving Au Sable country anymore
